Five Stars. Oct 09, Deckard Ra rated it it was amazing. I love the Wild Cards universe a lot! The story here is so great and touching that I nearly felt a tear come out at the end, when plot twist after plot twist hammers my poor heart.
I could go on more but I do not want to spoil the story. Plenty of sex references within, not suitable for children.
Sep 04, Rich Steeves rated it it was amazing. What an exciting, emotional end to this triad. Man, I never thought Rusty would be a great POV character, but I love him.
Other favorites take center stage, but none moreso than Mark Meadows himself. A great book for new and old WC readers alike.
Aug 25, Raja rated it liked it. Really enjoying my return to this very lived-in world of powers and deformities, even if some of the writers can only manage groan-worthy dialogue, and the focus on child soldiers in this volume was touching.
Well developed characters and a strong sense of morality. Aug 30, Ted rated it really liked it. The last three were probably the best in the series in terms of character development.
Suicide Kings, as the third book of the Committee triad, follows the tradition established by Jokers Wild, the third book of the original Wild Cards triad.
While the two preceding books were always composed of alternating chapters penned by the different contributing authors, Suicide Kings is a true mosaic novel in which all of the contributions are edited together into a single continuous story.
As if he was not enough of a problem, both the Committee and the Caliphate discover that the PPA has an increasingly large number of aces working with their army against the Caliphate.
President Saraj of the Caliphate, having no aces of his own to counter the PPA, enlists the aid of Noel Matthews through blackmail.
Noel, seeing no way to defeat the PPA through either direct confrontation or assassination, sets in motion plans to bring down the PPA from within.
Unable to find satisfaction in his work for the UN, Rusty has been sponsoring a number of children in Africa.
In the previous two books, one of the contributors would provide a core narrative, a kind of skeleton to which the other contributors would attach their parts of the story.
The structure for Suicide Kings is very different. The perspective is constantly rotating between the six point-of-view characters, one for each author, and none of them dominate the others.
The result is a book with a much smoother narrative flow and a more even pace than its predecessors. Suicide Kings is the most realistic book of the triad, and consequently it is the most depressing.
George R. Martin makes it very clear in the afterward that one of the aims of this novel is to remind us that the problem of child soldiers in Africa is very real and very much a problem of today.
In that vein, something I found very interesting was the different ways the various characters handled the children. Alicia Nshombo treated the children of the PPA like her own personal property.
Tom Weathers loved and fiercely protected his own daughter, but thought nothing of what had been done to the PPA children or of using them as soldiers in his cause.
Josephine Hebert identifies with them as victims, and considers her own anger and pain to be one and the same as their own. Michelle Pond becomes obsessed with rescuing one little girl she has connected with, and along the way barely hesitates to kill another little girl to protect herself.
Jerusha Carter and Wally Gunderson both decide that they owe the children no less than to put their own lives at stake to protect them, and Wally never gives up on any child no matter what they have done or had done to them.
What is so bizarre and yet disturbingly insightful is what makes them all the same. They all see themselves as doing what is right and necessary.
Nshombo and Weathers saw themselves as every bit as moral and heroic as we see Rusty and Gardner, and that is what makes them truly frightening figures.
Suicide Kings was exactly what I was hoping for as the conclusion of the triad. It is a rip-roaring story which is also capable of making you think and feel.
It is also an interesting counterpart to Inside Straight, each book representing the opposing extremes of power and heroism.
If you enjoyed the books in the triad so far, Suicide Kings has a lot to offer you. Check it out. Excellent volume An engrossing tale, with fascinating characters and unexpected twists.
The bad guys meet satisfying fates and not all the good guys die. One of the better books in the series. Jul 23, Theresa rated it it was amazing.
Martin editor A great piece of editing Magic… Melinda Snodgrass I bow to your ability to seamlessly blend the story.
As a Mosaic novel, many who look into the series may wonder that this book has so many authors. It is due to the dedication of the authors, the commitment to the consortium rules and ideals that create a seamless piece.
Even knowing the various authors for a while I could not pull out any individual writing style… Suicide Kings is the Suicide Kings Wild Cards 20 by George R.
Even knowing the various authors for a while I could not pull out any individual writing style… Suicide Kings is the final third in the trilogy of the Wild Card version of American Hero.
The book shows the final development of the new batch of characters, and through growth, sacrifice and loss have learned to live beyond the bounds of their Wild Card gifts and abilities or liabilities.
The book in general is a dark story looking into child soldiers in Africa and the destruction of society within by corrupt and ruthless rulers.
The Wild Card virus again has been put to its original use, as a weapon, inflicted on hapless children of war torn Africa for the twisted policies of corrupt and destructive leaders.
Mark Meadows Tom Weathers is a key feature in the story. Looking through his eyes at the destruction that his desires and dreams caused and inflicted on millions around the world shows how the ideals of changing the system, may be corrupted by the excess of human need.
His path from innocent idealist, to heartbreaking helplessness shows how ideals can be overdone, and bring destruction in their zeal. Michelle Pond Amazing Bubbles recovers from her heroic sacrifice to stave New Orleans from a nuclear bomb.
What brings her back is the dream of the destruction and violence of child soldiers in Africa. Wally Gunderson Rustbelt is an idealistic hero, he would strive beyond his capacity to move stand or fight for someone else.
The book looks at his quest to find balance with his selfless nature, and learning to love others. It is the final development of his character.
Jonathan Tipton-Clarke Bugsy one of the first American hero characters learns to let go of the past, by learning to risk what he has for something better.
He learns the value of the past to teach us, but also the value of letting go those ties that bind us. There are many more sub-plots and stories that could be used as discussion pieces in the Wild Card fan club for years.
A great book, congratulations for continuing this remarkable series, and inspiring so many to the broad scope of human nature, and possibility.
Apr 08, Jamie Revell rated it it was amazing Shelves: science-fiction. The conclusion of the "trilogy" of books that began with Inside Straight , this follows the usual format of merging all the remaining plotlines into a single cohesive novel, rather than a set of interlinked short stories.
As is also often the case, it's the best of the three. Here, the focus is on child soldiers in Congo, and on the Committee and its allies uncovering a monstrous crime against humanity in the region.
In the grander scheme of things, it's the final showdown with the Radical, which The conclusion of the "trilogy" of books that began with Inside Straight , this follows the usual format of merging all the remaining plotlines into a single cohesive novel, rather than a set of interlinked short stories.
In the grander scheme of things, it's the final showdown with the Radical, which has been brewing for some time now.
Of course, anyone who's been reading the series since the beginning knows exactly who and what the Radical really is, although at times the book seems to toy with the notion that you might have come in late say, after George R.
Martin became famous and still be uncovering the mystery along with the characters. To be fair, it probably works equally well either way.
While Martin presumably had little to do with the book apart from writing the afterword he seems to be busy with something else these days , elements of his style are still apparent.
Some fairly nasty things happen, often to decent people, and not everyone makes it out alive. The Wild Cards are often weaker when they move out of America, but in this instance, that's not really the case - although I can't rule out the possibility that it's just that I don't know Africa as well as I know, say, Britain.
The brutality of the background, with its child soldiers and mass graves, offsets the superheroics, but it's the characters that shine the most.
We have the love story between Rustbelt and Gardener, as they travel into their own "heart of darkness", including some of the most tense parts of the novel.
Hoodoo Mama also returns from the previous novel, memorably speaking in almost nothing but swearwords, yet nonetheless getting some depth as the sheer amount of death around begins to overwhelm even her.
Plus, of course, the Amazing Bubbles, and the Radical, whose grip on sanity is slowly slipping as the story progresses. All in all, I really enjoyed this, and, if it isn't quite perfect, it's close enough for five stars.
Mar 05, T. In the world of Wildcards, an alien virus was released over New York City in These were called Jokers.
Suicide Kings is the third novel in a trilogy, that mostly details the aces and some Jokers who work for the UN sanctioned Committee.
This In the world of Wildcards, an alien virus was released over New York City in This novel can be read alone, of course, as each of the characters featured each written by a different writer follow complete character arcs, and the story, although following the events of the past two novels, is self-contained.
If you are new to the WildCards universe, I would suggest going back and reading the first couple of volumes, recently reissued.
This book may be my favorite in the series so far. It may also feature my favorite character of the series so far: Rustbelt. What makes him my favorite is his indomitable spirit and his heart of gold.
He and the other main characters largely become involved with the People's Paradise of Africa, a burgeoning nation led by a sinister brother and sister, and supported by the insane and possibly most powerful Ace on the planet, The Radical.
This story has so much intense drama, action, and suspense, I could not put it down. The bad guys are well developed and horrifically interesting.
The good guys are fallible, often bumbling, and eminently admirable. I won't give too much away, except to say that if you read the original novels back in the eighties and nineties, you won't be disappointed.
Many of the old characters appear or are referred to by this next generation of heroes. Avery rushes to meet his sister at the appointed drop-off, but she does not appear.
Charlie and Lono track down the two kidnappers, who insist they never kidnapped Elise and the whole operation was a con. Charlie and Lono kill the thugs, and it is revealed that Max and Elise set the whole thing up, splitting the ransom between them and the thugs.
Charlie and Lono track Max and Elise to a boat off a tropic island where, although Charlie understands their reasons for conning him and agrees with Max on how special Elise is, he has Lono shoot them both dead.
The screen dissolves to a rotoscope red and the film ends. Suicide Kings was shot in Los Angeles. The film also features two alternate endings.
In the other ending, Charlie allows them to live, but takes his money, after which Lono shoots holes in the boat, causing it to slowly sink.
However, test audiences didn't like these endings as much, feeling that Max and Elise needed to pay for the betrayal of their friends and grief they had caused.
For those who aren't offended by extreme profanity and violence, Suicide Kings offers a kinetic and surprisingly funny two hours.
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Suicide Kings Theatrical release poster. Christopher Walken Denis Leary Sean Patrick Flanery Johnny Galecki Jay Mohr Jeremy Sisto Henry Thomas Cliff DeYoung Laura San Giacomo.
Eyes 'n Rice . Christopher Walken shines as the captive Charlie, and his deadpan delivery filled with occasional menace makes for some priceless moments.
It's really fun seeing him match wits with a group full of youngsters including Henry Thomas little Elliott from E.
Denis Leary shines as the anger prone thug Lono, and a fair amount of the film's humor is because of him alone.
The film's got some neat ideas, and dialogue is pretty sharp, but it's not without its problems. The film's plot gets really twisty, turny, and complex, and becomes rather muddled, convoluted, and messy at times.
It also feels a little self consciously hip, and it feels like the film is going out of it's way to be cool and it comes off as forced instead of natural.
Also, I think the times when the film shifts focus away from Charlie and the youngsters could have been handled a lot batter, and maybe more could have been done with them.
Overall though, this is a rather okay film. I've got a bit of a personal attachment to it as it played a role in my becoming the film buff I am today, so I can't be too hard on it, but even then, it's no masterwork or anything.
It's just a shame that the film didn't get more attention. I mean, of all the films that tried to cash in on Qt's success, this is easily one of the better ones.
